A year ago today the great David Bowie passed away. Without a doubt one of the most important artists of the last 50 years. We want to pay tribute to him with a selection of Bowie’s songs play by some of the artists that will participate in Mad Cool 2017.
In 1997, the band performed with Bowie himself at Madison Square Garden in New York as guests at their 50th birthday special concert. Both Dave Ghrol and Taylor Hawkins have recognized their admiration for Bowie in numerous interviews and often perform live "Under Pressure", his collaborative song with Queen.
Even though it may seem strange, Jeff Tweedy and Co also paid tribute to David Bowie. It happened last February, barely a month after his decease. Wilco performs a rendition of 1969 Bowie’s classic ’Space Oddity' at Brooklyn's Kings Theatre.
In 1991 Dinosaur Jr. recovered this beautiful song as a B-side of the single "The Wagon". Last year J Mascis performed it live with Sean Lennon (yes, John and Yoko’s son) at the Music Of Bowie Night tribute concert at Carnegie Hall in New York.
We do not know if David Bowie gets to hear this version of "Ashes To Ashes" that Warpaint recorded for the album We Were So Turned On: A Tribute to David Bowie (2010), but surely he would have been pleased. The quartet combines avant-garde and accessibility in the best tradition of the English musician.
Well, it will be more accurate to say Britt Daniel than Spoon. The lead singer of the band was the last of the artists that will be playing on Mad Cool 2017 in pay tribute to the late icon. It was during a Sleater-Kinney on last New Year’s Eve. He joins the band for a cover of “Rebel Rebel”, one of Bowie’s most iconic anthems.
