The band surprised fans at a benefit gig for the victims of the recent warehouse fire in Oakland, California. Billie Joe Armstrong (voice, guitar) and Mike Dirnt (bass) join local punk band SWMRS, whose lineup includes Armstrong’s own sons Joey and Jakob Danger. The gig was organised by local music store 1-2-3-4 Go! Records to raise money for this month’s Oakland fire at the Ghost Ship warehouse, a haven for local artists, which claimed the lives of 36 people. In the middle of SWMRS’ set, both Green Day members join the stage to play five of their songs: ‘Armatage Shanks’, ‘Stuck With Me’, ‘Scattered’, ‘Waiting’, ‘Murder City’
Billie Joe Armstrong wrote on Instagram afterwards: “amazing emotional night last night.. Me and Mr Dirnt got a chance to sit in with smrs. a benefit for the ghost ship folks. i’m playing with my babies.. Jakob and Joey..” along with a picture of the event.
The punk band were active in Oakland’s DIY scene in the late ’80s and it wasn’t the first time the paid tribute to the victims of the warehouse fire. Performing on December 10, Billie Joe told the crowd about the tragedy and dedicated the song ‘Boulevard Of Broken Dreams’ to the fire’s victims.
