MAD COOL FESTIVAL is an experience that welcomes more than three hundred thousand people per year, and that is why it's our responsibility to create a festival as sustainable as possible, so that in the future we can continue enjoying together.
That is why we are constantly working to lower our environmental impact, in order to create a sustainable event. We know there is a long way to go, but it is our commitment to achieve it.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) defines it as:
"One that is designed, organized and implemented in a way that minimizes negative environmental impacts and leaves a positive legacy for the community that hosts it."
Mad Cool Festival has become a cultural and touristic reference in Spain and that is why our commitment is:
To become a change-maker, creating the Festival of the future, based on efficiency and sustainability with a positive impact on three fundamental aspects: environmental, socio-cultural and economic.
Reducing our potential negative environmental impacts and optimizing processes to make them more efficient.
Ensuring sustainable management based on the reduction of the ecological footprint.
Securing the preservation of human rights of all people involved, as well as transparency and good governance by the organization.
Contributing and collaborating with the strengthening and sustainable development of the sector and the community.
Being an amplifier of the effects of climate change.
We have installed a product waste separation system of 500 containers with a capacity of 800 liters each, distributed throughout the festival, so that you can help us with the selective collection of waste products. (paper, plastic, organic and waste).
We use soft drinks with returnable packaging.
We have eliminated single-use plastic in the food stands and replaced it with biodegradable material.
We have a selective collection of glass at the bars.
Our cups are reusable, that's why they cost one euro. Don't lose your cup, instead, use it during all the festival.
Whenever we can, we reuse graphic printing materials (tarpaulins, posters). We also use materials from previous events and give them a second life.
We have digitalized all of the festival's useful info, so it is available through QR codes, in social networks and the APP of the Festival itself. In this way we avoid the use of paper.
Our artificial lawn is reused every year and we save liters and liters of irrigation water and chemical fertilizers.
We use sustainable materials for all our initiatives and communications.
We have protocols and awareness guidelines for workers, sponsors, suppliers, waiters and food trucks and other collaborators for waste recycling during the event.
At Mad Cool Festival we reduce and optimize energy use by placing efficient lighting:
We invest on LED technology for the lighting of the bars, tents, agoras, Vip and The Club areas, dressing rooms... reducing energy consumption.
We use Stage V generators, which have less CO2 emissions.
We collaborate with sustainable partners who help us incorporate innovative and clean technologies:
With Iberdrola, a world leader in renewable energy, we have implemented our Smartflower, a solar energy system that provides "The Loop Stage" with clean energy, making it 40% more efficient, thanks to its rotation capacity and solar tracker.
On our production team, we use electric vehicules. Seat Mo collaborates with the festival offering mobility solutions that are simple, sustainable and ecological, which allow us to reduce the use of fossil fuels.
We encourage more sustainable means of transportation to the event, such as the bus, subway, carpooling and electric transportation.
We are conducting an audit on energetic efficiency, which will allow us to find opportunities to improve and reduce our greenhouse emissions.
We are also calculating our carbon footprint to be able to study compensation options once the festival is over, as it is our goal to become a carbon neutral festival.
At Mad Cool Festival there are vegetarian and vegan options, as well as gluten free and lactose free foods.
We prioritize suppliers that purchase organic and proximity products (0 km) and food, boosting local consumption.
In addition to the recyclable cups, the packaging used at Mad Cool by food trucks and stands, is 100% plastic free.
For the festival it is essential to continue giving visibility to the environmental problem, that's why we will continue to be an amplifier of the effects of climate change.
We use the festival's communication platforms to spread the values of sustainability.
We generate quality employment in the local community.
Each year, the festival's invitation carries the payment of a fee that we will donate to a social cause. This year 2022, it will go to C.E.A.R Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (S.C.R.A). CEAR has been defending the right to asylum and human rights since 1979, promoting the integral development of refugees fleeing from armed conflicts or human rights violations, as well as asylum seekers, stateless people and immigrants in need of international protection and/or at risk of social exclusion.
We collaborate with emerging talent by giving them a space at the festival as a loudspeaker for their work with Mad Cool Talent by Vibra Mahou.
We install accesses and areas for people with reduced mobility to watch the concerts.
We have created a Purple Point providing a place of help in case of sexist violence and aggressions against women. Also, a Rainbow Point, which offers a safe place where you can ask for information, support or advice on any matter related to LGBTI+.
Minimum footprint: use public transportation to come to the festival or carpool. There is a Festival Telegram channel to meet new people who can join you (t.me/lonelymads).
Estimate your carbon footprint scanning the Iberdrola QR that you will find all over the venue.
Help us separate waste and use the containers that you will find throughout the festival.
Do not waste water from the fountains.
Reuse your glass.
Iberdrola, as a leader in the promotion of the SDGs and a benchmark in the fight against climate change in order to build the festival of the future.
